A Full House

What a great evening, more chairs than usual were put out and nearly all the seats were taken when it was time for Teresa Dukes to call the meeting to order. Teresa welcomed us all, including five guests. She handed over to our Toastmaster for the evening, Jeff Bartrop. Jeff must have thought that we were all looking well pleased with ourselves because the introduction was ‘something I have won’.

David Atherton-Cooper gave us an update on the District 71 Contest. David made full use of his five minute slot which he turned into a short talk. He said that he had thoroughly enjoyed
the experience and felt very proud to have made the final eight. There were, he said, an audience of five hundred. 1,000 eyes, 16,000 teeth and just 8 contestants!
He went on to say that the conference is lots of different things for different people.
There was a Saturday morning workshop and a tips and hints section.
On Sunday, Lance Miller, the 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking, was the guest speaker.
Lance concluded this talk by advising his audience to remember the three knows:
Know the message, know the audience and know the room.
David advised us to visit other clubs to gain extra experience.
Teresa congratulated David and proudly presented him with the Lir Conference Trophy which he will hold for one year.
Teresa advised us to go to the Autumn Conference, she said it is worth every penny.

Debs Lawrence gave an excellent presentation on a Mentoring Workshop.
She commenced by saying that Sophocles had said “learn from someone experienced”.
Debs talked about the various types of mentoring, from the inexperienced who needed someone to take them out of their comfort zone and to listen to them, no matter what. Help experienced members to further refine skills and they can also learn from mentees.
Be concerned about others and be supportive of the Club were just a few of the points she touched on.
Just before the break, Jeff wanted to know who has a Blue Peter Badge!

Club Business - Jeff reminded us that the next meeting will be the AGM.
Congratulations to David who is in the top eight in the UK.
Caption contest; theme – Hats. Details on the website (Please come up with a caption).

The prepared speeches were given by Marie Miller, Jon Rowe and Ann Rayner.

Marie talked about ‘Me and my Clothes’ from the time she was very small and always had hand me downs from her big sister to when she always dressed very smartly for business and what she wore when she eventually got married.
Jon talked about ‘Stupidity’ jumping out of a plane. He did it, but never again!
Ann talk was called ‘By the Right, Quick March’. Ann told us about her career as a physical training instructor in the army where she taught boys of 16/18 years old. She went on to tell us how she represented GB in the World Championships in Australia.

The evening concluded with three Topics.
The General Evaluation was given by Teresa who reminded us that when choosing a topic to remember our audience and to avoid buts.

What an excellent and fun evening. Jeff closed the meeting.
