A Word from the Governor
Welcome back after all the festive celebrations over the holiday season! We started our New Year off right because by the end of the meeting we had signed up two new Members - Liz Parker and Howard Smith. Howard has even volunteered to be deputy to the VP of Membership. Welcome to you both - now the fun starts!
Our Toastmaster for the evening was Frances Crane and she opened the evening with a great incentive to escape from the duldroms of a dark and dreary January. Where would you go if someone gave you £2000? Everyone decided that anywhere that was hot and dry would be the best option!
Steve Bell introduced the word 'OPTIMAL' and found that a lot of people struggled to get it into their speeches. I think maybe we need to put the word in a more visible place like back at the lights! However, we did see a couple of our speakers sneak it into their speeches. Well done!
Instead of a topics session we were privileged to have the Area 1 Governor, Chris Cox, give us a talk on the roles of the Committee. With Speak Easy being so new it was nice to have these roles explained to all members and to help the committee members feel at ease with the responsibilities they have taken on.
Our speakers for the evening were Rosie Clements and Young-Mi Ryan who gave us their Ice Breaker speeches followed by Ian Crane who treated us with an Advanced Manual speech. Rosie started us off at a fast-forward pace and by the end of her speech we were totally exhausted - one extremely busy lady. Young-Mi walked us through her 20% weight gain starting all the way back to Korea and finishing by saying starting a family is a good change making the future bright. Two very busy and motivated women! Ian's speech concentrated on 'It's good to talk' or is it. Are we aware of how we come across to other people we speak to on the phone? So, the next time you are on the phone remember it's good to be nice!
Yet again we had two of our new members rise to the challenge of evaluation. Being new to evaluating usually takes time to get into the swing of it. However, Gerry Goodwin and Phil Zoio gave it a go and did extremely well - the more you stand up and evaluate the better you get AND the easier it becomes. Jeff Bartrop was our third evaluator and gave a text book evaluation using the Commend Recomend Commend sandwich technique.
Our General Evaluator tonight was Jeff Short who thought he had escaped from doing anything, but we quickly took care of that! He humoured us and made us all laugh as he walked us through his evaluation. I felt he gave extremely good improvement points to all the roles he evaluated including our Area Governor. Thanks Jeff for your style!!!
Next meeting is 27th January 2005. Get those Speeches ready and start thinking about the Speech and Evaluation contest on 10th March
