Back from extinction

28th July

After a long time Jeff Short has taken the responsibility for toast master today. As we don’t have permanent Sergeant- at- Arms, Jeff came early and gave us the surprise of the evening by changing the sitting layout. He made a sitting arrangement in the shape of a horseshoe.

The theme of introduction was-“ if we have the power to bring something back from extinction, what should I bring back”.

Raj Mistry was the word master for today’s evening. He introduced the word “Luminous” as the word of the day. The word was really illuminated in its use through out the session.

The table topic master was Ian Crane. He brought a new theme on London. This theme really brought out the emotions involved with London and the reckless work of 7/7. The topic brought some of the beautiful memories involved with our toastmasters.

Martin evaluated the table topic. He was very elaborate and detailed in his evaluation. I really enjoy his professor like presentation.

Teresa Duke brought in the Club business. She discussed about officer training sessions, and the benefit each of them received through the sessions. She highlighted the benefit of joint sessions amongst different clubs. She also highlighted the possibility of Speak Easy @ Martlesham of becoming a Distinguished Club if we all put our combined efforts to get more members. She also described the criteria to achieve distinguished and specially distinguished club.

The prepared speech:

Jeff described about the prepared speech and he took the responsibility as evaluator for Mike Watts.

Mike Watts gave his speech on the ATM. It was evident from the beginning that he had thoroughly prepared not only his speech but also the logistics for the presentation needed for the speech. His logistics included projector, laptop, projector screen and flip chart. The speech was on Project Plan. He described very nicely about the critical path, the importance of tools in the project planning and tracking. He gave us a feel of the system by using laptop, projector. He used MS Project and also displayed the capability of project management tool.

Apart from the visual display, he kept us engrossed with his speech with constant questions.

Today’s timekeeper was Howard Smith. He performed his duty of not only keeping the time but also adding a title of the topic with each time description.

Sue Coppens Brown has completed her fourth speech. This was an interesting topic. She titled her topic as Three Old Friends. She described about three favourite novels from her early time.

Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson, The Little Grey Men by BB, The wind in the willows by Kenneth Graham.

She read out some paragraphs from each book and described it through the characters drawn and displayed on individual stand. This method of description gave a strong impact on the subject.

Jon Rowe gave his third speech based on his recent trip to Chile and titled it as “Altitude”. He went to Andes mountain of Chile and planned a day climb to a 3500 M peak created by the volcano. He nicely narrated in his story, the pressure, the emotion and the male ego in the beginning of the climb. When he missed the pick by couple of hundred meters, he described his ultimate realisation, how he was not disappointed rather happy to try the climbing. He used nice description like “Snake our way to Volcano”.

Jeff Short gave a detail evaluation of Mike’s speech. He described this as a ballroom practice.

Teresa was all praise to Sue, especially to the technique where all the book characters painted in play cards and displayed, which Sue used during her reading through the book paragraphs.

Ian Crane evaluated Jon. It seems Ian was very impressed with Jon and which was very obvious in his thorough detailing of the events and distinctly identifying the beginning, the body and the conclusion of the speech.

Table Topic was given to Margaret. It seems receiving a table topic award has become a regular activity for Margaret.

This brought to an end to one more glorious evening in the SpeakEasy@Martlesham club.
