Blue Bag Yellow Bag
For the first time in what seems like ages, the sun shone on Martlesham and gave a bright and relaxed atmosphere to the evening.
Toastmaster Teresa Dukes must have guessed that the warm evening made members have second thoughts about been indoors at a club meeting. The introduction asked ‘what would you do if you weren’t here tonight ?’ Many people would be in the garden or out having a drink … some combined the two and as I type up these notes, I wish I was doing that now !!
I stepped into the Wordmaster role as short notice and provided a ‘two for the price of one’ word … Wind or Wind, which ever took the speakers fancy.
Sue Coppens-Brown hosted a brilliant topics session. Using a favourite format, Sue asked the topic speaker to pick an item from a bag and try to sell it to the audience. Another interesting twist was that a blue bag had ‘easy’ items’ and a yellow bag had’ difficult’ items. Eclectic best describes the items drawn out … an eye glass repair kit, a magnetic magic wand and an ornate carved horn to name just a few. One item that was quickly withdrawn by Sue was here water bottle that some how made it into a bag. Dave Nightingale came out winner with a sales pitch that gave you not only the item but two cars, some money and his house in with the deal !!!
Club business reported back on the success of David Atherton-Coopers success at the Division G International Speech contest. Beating off strong competition that included past UK winner Andrew Brammer, David now represents the Division at the conference in Ireland on the 13-14th May.
Good Luck goes to David from all of us at the Club.
The prepared speeches were given by Raj Mistry and Ian Read.
Raj vividly described his life long dream to fly. A slight twist was he flew underwater. Raj’s hobby is diving and he recalled a trip where he flew like a condor, swooped like a hawk and then turned into Superman. A great speech.
Ian Read then continued selling theme from the Topics session to recall the joy, excitement and wonderful offerings of Berlin. A history lesson turned into a holiday rep jaunt around this fine City that is a favourite of Ian. Berlin comes highly recommended
The next report will hopefully include the words ‘David Wins in Ireland’, but don’t wait for the report, come along and hear first hand the conference report and share an evening with Speak Easy.
