Husky Hopeful speaks ...

'Disaster struck the 2006 Division G competition bid at 9.30 on Friday morning. Plucky young(ish) hopeful David Atherton-Cooper began to complain of a sore throat and persistent coughing while boarding Ryanair flight FR219 to Dublin and by 3.30 that afternoon, leading physicians confirmed that he was indeed losing his voice.

Undaunted to the last, our contender bravely accepted the doctors' advice to 'drink plenty and get some rest', by selflessly leaving Friday's after-dinner craic early on Saturday morning - and retiring to his bed.

By 3.30 on Saturday afternoon, tensions were at fever pitch, as David bravely took the stage and gave a heroic account of himself, worthy of a Division G champion. It seemed that all might be well - and indeed, a number of the more impressionable ladies in the audience were heard to comment most favourably on David's husky and melodious tones - but our hopes were cruelly dashed by the judges who favoured other speakers on the day.

In an exclusive interview this morning, David explained that he 'was proud to have represented Division G in such a high calibre and hard-fought contest.'

All rumours that David's dance card was full to overflowing that evening are, of course, denied.
