More Icebreaking than the Titanic
You know, I don't think it really matters what type of weather we have, Speak Easy always seems to bring in the people. This week through the rain and sleet and snow we still welcomed 4 visitors. And three of them have joined us. A big welcome to: Julia Lincoln, Martin Koyabe and Margaret Stanway!
Our Toastmaster for the evening was Jeff Bartrop who opened the evening with introductions covering 'what you listened to on your journey to the club'. And what a mixture of examples which ranged from Meatloaf's 'Bat out of Hell' to listening to (and liking) 'The Archers'.
Ian Read introduced the word 'PONTIFICATE' for his first attempt as Wordmaster. You can find his report on the use of this word and other lovely phrases which came out on the night at §2.
Eleanor Ramsey covered our topics session and treated us to a theme based around cars! Our winner for the evening was Philippe Josseron with his rendition of French Driving in England. They are as mad as we thought!
Our speakers for the evening were Howard Smith and Sam Parnell who gave us their Ice Breaker speeches followed by Young-Mi Ryan who treated us with speech number 2 Organising your Speech. Our Icebreakers put on spectacular performances giving us the opportunity to gain an insight into their lives. Howard is a very ambitious young man on the edge of buying his first house at 19 and Sam is an extremely busy woman with the responsibility of being the mum of 2 lovely children to wanting to find that perfect job! All I can say is that these two are well on their way to becoming excellent speakers! Young-Mi's speech was very informative to the ways of dealing with the French housing market. If I ever decided to uproot and move to France, I will definitely contact Young-Mi for advice! Well done to all three of you.
Evaluating - Three very succinct evaluations were given tonight. I think our evaluators paid attention at the recent Officer's training session. The evaluations by Steve Bell, Sue Coppens-Browne and Vivi Coppens-Browne were in true textbook style. Commend, Recommend, Commend. The sandwich approach always goes down well.
Our General Evaluator tonight was Frances Crane. It is always nice to hear from Frances because she has such a wonderful way of giving praise and improvement points. At the beginning of the meeting it is important to everyone, but especially to visitors, that we introduce ourselves which means that we tell everyone our NAME. It is also important to remember throughout the night that there is a formal opening and close when you take control of the speaking area. The opening consists of: Mister/Madam Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters and most welcomed quests; the closing consists of: Mister/Madam Toastmaster.
Next meeting is 24th February 2005. Get those Speeches ready and start thinking about the Speech and Evaluation contest on 10th March
