Happy Birthday to us ….
Speak Easy opened it’s doors and hosted it’s first Demonstration Night one year ago. Reaching 23 members by the time the first ‘official’ night was held, hosting the Area Contest and a new member coming 3rd in the Area 1 Humorous contest are just a few of the highlights this year.
Come and join us and be part of our achievements during the coming year.
Phil Zoio sent Speak Easy members into dream land when he posed the question ‘What would you do if you had the whole day to yourself?’. Sleeping was a common theme !!! other wishes included dancing with Patrick Swayze, playing space invaders, picnics by the sea and meeting up with old friends.
The ‘Tips and Techniques’ session opened the floor to suggestions on how the club could promote itself. The usual five-minute slot lasted 20 minutes as the ideas came thick and fast. The following are some of those discussed :-
Word of mouth – all members to promote to anyone and everyone they talk to.
Through local clubs
Leaflets and posters at supermarkets, halls and newspapers
Speechcraft (a formal Toastmaster supported course)
Open evening
Include in you’re on line diary/whereabouts
Ipswich Small Business Association (working breakfast meetings)
Stand at BT Adastral Park or coffee lounge publicity.
Mike Watts hosted a philosophical Topics Session that taxed our minds and not just our ability to speak instantly on a given subject. “How long is a piece of string ..?”, “Do viruses have rights?” and “what did the cat bring in” being just some of the topics ‘inflicted’ on members.
Martin Koyobe entertained and informed with his 2nd speech entitled ‘Shopping’. He tracked the history of the shopping cart and looked forward to the future and considered how they will develop. The speech developed from an informative format into a subtle and very humorous speech, one that could have easily been a strong contender for the recent contest. Maybe next year Martin ….
Ian Crane continued the prepared speeches with a tale of mishap entitled ‘Hospitals and Me’. Ian’s continued visits to the hospital seemed to be as a result of trying to stay fit and healthy by playing Squash. Ian, do as I do, be a lazy chap and you’ll be much safer !!!
