Queue For Room 101
Today, it is a nice summer evening. We started the meeting right on time. The absence of a regular sergeant-at-arms (SAA) is felt. The extra responsibility for absence of SAA is borne mostly by the President and VP Education.
Meeting started well as Raj Mistry started his maiden Toastmaster’s responsibility with a high spirit. The introduction session started with a very unusual note; Raj asked us to tell what are we planning to avoid in the coming weekend instead of planning to do in the coming weekend.
Today’s word master was Andy Pitt and he introduced the word “Woolgathering”. I could feel a comfortable feeling between the members after the introduction of the word.
Teresa Dukes showed her impromptu skill in taking over the Topic Master responsibility when she saw there was no topic master for the day. She came out with a brilliant table topic idea instantly. She gave topic on colour, number and letters. The topic gave a real tease to our brains to describe colours like Blue, Purple; letters like Q, Z and numbers like 101, 13 etc. The table topic was won by Phil Zoio by describing the letter Q and reminding everyone of the famous British habit of Queuing.
Margaret Stanway evaluated the table topic today. She went into the details during the evaluation and gave valuable suggestions on formal opening, gestures, onomatopoeia etc. to the participants. She herself is a very strong participant and to date has won a couple of table topic awards.
Jeff Bartrop gave the tips for today with his usual flair and creativity. I don’t know, how he can create a tip for us in every meeting. Teresa is taking a lot of care to bring to the club an extraordinary achievement. She gave nice details of our achievements in a short period. She also brought the concern in front of the members of less turn out. She requested the members to bring more members to the club, so that we can get more exposure and can gain by getting to know more. Ian Crane reminded us all about updating our individual profiles on the website.
Sue Coppens-Browne was our speaking tonight and she is very active in the social concerns. She is involved in understanding some of the very basic needs of social changes. She is involved in an organization, which is trying to understand the basic necessity of the institute of marriage and the attitude towards this of the new upcoming generation. She is trying to understand this in a very practical way. She is working with a group that takes married couples to the school students to discuss this institution in a very intimate manner. She gave her 3rd prepared speech on her mission of motivating married couples to come to the students and have a frank discussion on the institute called marriage. It was a very articulate and impressive speech with many supporting documentations.
Steve Bell did the time keeping.
Martin, who had to be out of the town for official reasons, could not give his prepared speech. So, during this allotted time for prepared speeches, we discussed the benefits we have received from the club. I personally told the benefit I have received from attending the club. How I have benefited to gain the confidence to speak in front of people. Margaret told the benefit of meeting new people. Raj told about getting the opportunity to speak non technical things with people.
Francis Crane did the General Evaluation with lots of encouragement to the upcoming speakers and then Raj gave the final bell on completion of one more glorious evening.
