Teresa Dukes
I joined Toastmasters back in 1999 in order to improve my speaking skills at work. I wanted to be taken more seroiusly when asked for my opinion and knew I had to do something proactive to help make this happen.
Since that day in August 1999 I have never looked back. I've grown from a little mouse afraid of my own shadow to a proud eagle soaring the skies looking for those timid mice to help. I know this sounds rather silly or maybe even arrogant, but I love to help and I want to give back what I have learnt from Toastmasters.
I've not only improved my speaking skills but I have also built on my Leadership skills through the programme that the club offers. By pursuing this route I have been privileged enough to be co-founder of Speak Easy @ Martlesham which is now a fully fledged Toastmasters Club.
Top public speaking tip
Remember that you only have one chance to make a first impression so dress for the occassion and ensure that you know who your audience is going to be. Your speech and dress should always be appropriate for who you will be speaking to so do some research into the expected attendees. Find out if it will be CEOs or Techies or is it for a local friendship club, etc. Preparation, preparation, preparation!
