Toastmaster World Tour
Last night was no exception to exceptional weather! It snowed and sleeted and still for some reason 13 of us turned out for a cosy Speak Easy Meeting!
Our Toastmaster for the evening was Ian Crane who opened the evening with introductions 'If you could change your job and do anything else, what would you do?'. We had some interesting choices from our members and the ones that stick out to me were Sam's Beach Bartender, Ian's builder who doesn't have to meet deadlines and Liz's chance to be creative. Great start for all of us who dare to dream!
Sam Parnell introduced the word 'FEARLESSNESS' and thought that it would be a word no one used making her job relatively easy. However, we never let our members off that easy and Sam actually found herself truly busy keeping track of those who attempted to use the word and then writing down all the wonderful phrases that were used through the evening. You can find her report on the use of this word and other lovely phrases which came out on the night at §2.
Andy Pitts carried out a lovely Topics session with a journey around the world! We went from North America all the way to Australia in just 20 minutes. Our winner for the evening was Julia Lincoln with her journey down the path of self indulgence in Germany. To live with the gingerbread men, wine and chocolate - what more could you want.
We were lucky last night in that we had two excellent speeches given. Our first speaker was Ian Read with his Icebreaker entitled '0 to 45 in 6 minutes'. What a way Ian has with humour. We all walked away with something to remember him by - my memory will be the BT Martleman! Our second speaker for the evening was Jeff Bartrop. He gave us an advanced speech from the Professional Speakers manual covering a 'concept'. His speech was entitled Real World vs Virtual World. Amazing how 5 words could relate to so many different and yet similar things in our lives: Real, Virtual, Secrets, Limited, Open!
Evaluating - Rosie Clements gave her first evaluation last night on Ian's Icebreaker and she was full of commendations! As well she should have been because the speech was fantastic and full of life. Very difficult to find recommendations and yet she did manage to find one - 'be careful not to clap yourself'! Phil Zoio is becoming a regular evaluator in the club and last night he had the opportunity to evaluate Jeff Bartrop's speech. This was a really tough job because the idea of Jeff's speech was very abstract. Phil rose to the challenge and managed to commend, recommend, commend the delivery of the speech giving Jeff some ideas on how to improve in the future.
Our General Evaluator tonight was Jeff Short. I think Jeff is starting to like this role - he always seems to pick up on things which are very useful for the club to think about. Tonight was no exception. Jeff's tip for the night was all about Diction - To be clear and concise in how we say our words. It is a very important skill to work on for everyone - even if you are just speaking with your family. Maybe it's even more important then!
Next meeting is on 10th March 2005. This will be our club level Speech and Evaluation contest. A nice run-through before the Area Level Contest on 13th March
