AGM 2007

It was a small yet select gathering for the 2007 AGM. Debs toastmastered and chaired the AGM. Debs lead the introductions by asking where people would be to day if they weren’t at work. Phil Zoio gave the best answer that he wasn’t working at the moment, so if he was not not working he would have been at work! Dave Nightingale lead a discussion on the re-introduction of the reporter’s role. It was decided to bring back regular meeting reports. Actually this is statement of the bleedin’ obvious really as other wise you wouldn’t be reading this. Debs began the AGM with her president’s report, cleverly assigning the letters of Speakeasy to some aspect of the experience (it was in fact the letters of Speaceasw, if you want to be accurate). Dave gave a list of mostly numerical achievements of the past year, including a stunningly precise average of 2.667 prepared speeches per meeting. Sue said she had enjoyed the VP Membership Role highlighting the aspects of talking to people, open evenings, officer training and overcoming shyness. Jeff Bartrop gave a succinct report about VP Public Relations where he conceded that he had found the role challenging, though was glad to have given it a go. Phil said as a secretary he didn’t really do much. Ann said modestly sergeant at arms was any easy job, though no one believed her. Margaret gave out a summary balance sheet, which showed the finances to be in reasonable nick.
In the second half elections took place with the following results:
President = Sue
VP education = Dave
VP Membership = Dinesh
VP Public Relations = Sonya
Sergeant at Arms = Ann Nunn
Secretary = TBD
Treasurer = Margaret
The competent leader award was presented to Sue and Margaret.
Ann gave a heart felt speech on the plight of Britain’s homeless cats and the role of Cat’s Protection. Phil gave a speech entitled “What do you want in life?” This described his philosophy of jumping at opportunities when they presented themselves, rather than restrictive long-term goal setting as advocated at a recent seminar he attended. His speech was punctuated by an unintentional musical accompaniment (from his mobile phone). Dave Nightingale ran a shortened table topics session taking the session very literally, by making all the contestants talk on the topic of tables. Jeff Short told us about coffee tables. Andrew shone with an excellent tale of buying a table tennis table and putting it in too small a room. Joan struggled a bit on Round tables. Dinesh regaled us tales of the popularity of various world leaders’ dining tables at Davos. Ian Read was supposed to be talking about snooker tables, but went so far off-topic it ended up as critique of unaesthetic topless bathers in the Mediterranean circa 1980!!!!
